The Group aims to provide an opportunity to play Bridge in an informal, friendly, and non-competitive atmosphere. We play Chicago and standard ACOL. We welcome new members who play at a basic or intermediate level, and we are very adaptable at fitting in with different bidding systems. We do not play with fixed partners, so it does not matter if you are thinking of joining and do not have a partner. Unfortunately we are unable to provide formal tuition for complete beginners, but if you can play whist, and can learn the simple basics of the ACOL bidding system, please give it a try!
Currently meetings are by arrangement in Members' homes, with one full group meeting a month, in the Scout Hall. Details of forthcoming meetings are circulated to members every month.
Here's a challenge for prospective new members! The hand in the banner was dealt recently to East. East/West were vulnerable. North was dealer and passed. After much anguish East decided to open with 2 Clubs, 4 points short of the usual 23, but with the void in Spades and the strength of the Clubs, East was concerned about being left in 1 Club. South passed and West bid 2 Spades. Not liking 3NT with the void in Spades East jumped to 5 Clubs. South lead a Diamond, and West's dummy hand showed Ace, Queen, and Jack plus 3 low cards in Spades, but no other High Card Points, and doubletons in both Clubs and Diamonds. Eventually East went 1 down, with a score of -100 points.
